11 days and counting

Yay - it's 11 days and counting till Paul and I go on our NZ holiday and I'm very excited! We fly out Saturday morning at 9:30 am and fly into Auckland. Paul's sister Theresa is then driving us to their parents place in Tairua (Coromandel) where we shall hang out and relax for a few days. Then on Tuesday lunchtime we fly from Auckland to Wellington where the "mad" part of our trip begins. It will be 6.5 days of wedding planning and catching up with friends. I'm very excited about getting to see everyone again. I'm not sure I can say I'm "excited" about the wedding planning bit (that would be just going over board) but I am looking forward to it. Lots to do and so little time.

Hopefully we can catch up with everyone while we're in town. Kat is having a girls night at her place on the Friday night (Feb 15th) so all the girlies are invited to that (if I haven't emailed you then it's just because I'm useless and not because you're not invited - I think I've only emailed like 2 people about it and have relied on Kat doing the rest - and she doesn't have everyones email addresses). We're also going to do brunch on the Sunday somewhere. I was thinking the Parade Cafe but apparently the round the bays is on so being anywhere near Oriental Parade is not cool. So now we're thinking the bristol at 11am as they do pretty good breakfasts. So yeah you're all invited to that too. I'll be on my NZ cell while we're in town so feel free to call me on that (or email me for it if you no longer have the number) anytime after 5pm on Saturday Feb 9th :-)

Right back to work. I definitely shouldn't be updating my blog at work. Doh!

Yay for public holidays

Yay - so since Saturday was Australia Day we all get today off as a public holiday! And it's a scorcher too (is forecast to hit 30 finally) so Paul and I have decided to go for a swim. We're heading over the hill to Samford as apparently there are some good swimming holes about 6kms past there. Will probably be a 20 min drive from our place. If that's crap then we're going to head over to Wivenhoe Dam and check out how depressing the state of the dam is (it's only about 17% full). Hopefully we have a good day. But whatever we do it's better than being stuck in the office. Yay!

lunch time in the park

Well now that I'm working on site at QUT (Queensland University of Technology) instead of at our main office I actually have a much nicer area to go and eat lunch in. Yep - work is literally right next to the botanic gardens. Not down the road or across the street - we're right on the gardens. So the first week I was there is actually rained for most of it - but Paul and I did make it out into the gardens for lunch on the Friday. I also got off my lazy butt and went to the gardens for lunch on Thursday last week too :-) The other times I've been a bit slack and have only made it as far as the cafe at the bottom of my building - doh! Good thing I giving up coffee for lent this year aye!! Anyway so I've included a few pictures for your enjoyment :-)

The view out over one part of the gardens

Paul and I doing the self portrait thing. Go the bad hair day!

Some guys playing touch at lunch time. Although the area wasn't very flat :-\

Mmmmm - coffeeeeee!

Nothing to do with the gardens I know but these Frangapani trees are outside the door to my building and they smell divine every time you go near them. Mmmmmm! I want one in my back yard but unfortunately we don't have enough room for another big tree.

It's been a while

I apologise for deserting you all for a while and not updating my blog. I've moved onto a client site for work (QUT) and they track their internet usage so I have to be pretty careful about what I do at work. So no more Facebook or blog updating on work time. Stink!!

But not a lot has really been happening lately. Paul and I went up to Mooloolaba for a swim last weekend. I got pretty sunburnt even though I spent most of the day under my beach umbrella that Paul got me for Christmas. I guess I really just am soft. But the upside now is that I look nice and tanned - yay!

We've also had a visitor from NZ since Tuesday which has been really nice. Jessica and I went to Sacred Heart together and she's just starting a 3 month trip around Aussie. So we showed her a few of the sights around Brissy to get her started.

Well better go as I'm going wedding dress shopping with Debz today - yay!

Good bye Sir Ed

Wow - can't believe that Sir Edmund Hillary died this morning. Very sad! I don't know why but famous people like that dieing always floors me (nice famous people not tacky famous people). I guess its the invincible thing - they're not "real people", they're icons. They're not meant to die - they're meant to live for ever (as are mum & Paul - or so I keep telling them).
And even worse, I mentioned it to a couple of my work mates and one of them was like "whose that".
May he rest in peace :-)

The weekend is nigh

Yay - the weekend is almost here. This week has just been one of those weeks aye! I've struggled to motivate myself to do anything really. Although I have been good and have made it to the gym twice :-) So going tonight and then on Sunday will make it 4 times this week - that's pretty good I say!

Although there are other positives. Debz and Lance and the kids would have gotten back yesterday so thats good! I missed having Debbie around! Now we will definitely have to organise our house warming bbq. At this stage I'm thinking Saturday Feb 2nd which is the weekend before we go to NZ. I was thinking the weekend before that but thats a long weekend with Australia Day on Monday 28th (wahoo) so I guess it's likely some people may go out of town.

Yay, only 4 more weeks till Paul and I go to NZ :-) And then I get to see all my friends. Yay! I miss you guys!! Hugs to everyone.

Hmm - have you noticed how some days you are like "piss off and leave me alone" and then other days you just want to hug everyone. Aren't hormones weird! Anyway strangely enough I'm in a hug mood today. So poor Paul had to put up with me telling him how much I loved him and getting lots of hugs this morning. He probably thinks I'm queer - te he I'm probably am (ok ok not that kind of queer - weird queer - quirky even some might say).

Anyway I'm just rambling about nothing now as I'm procrastinating actually doing some work. Bad Ange!

Hope you all have a great weekend :-)

Apostrophe

After so many years of not caring I realised today that I have no idea how to use an apostrophe outside of shortening "it is" or "is has" to "it's" type of thing.

So good old wikipedia to the rescue :-) I just spent the past 10 mins reading up on it and have found out that it's all about possession and plurals.
's indicates possession
s' indicates plural

So for those of you who have also gotten rusty on your primary school english lessons are some examples from wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apostrophe)

To illustrate that possessive apostrophes matter, and that their usage affects the meaning of written English, consider these four phrases (listed in Steven Pinker's The Language Instinct), each of which has a meaning distinct from the others:
  • my sister's friend's investments
(the investments belonging to a friend of my sister)
  • my sister's friends' investments
(the investments belonging to several friends of my sister)
  • my sisters' friend's investments
(the investments belonging to a friend of several of my sisters)
  • my sisters' friends' investments
(the investments belonging to several friends of several of my sisters)
Kingsley Amis, on being challenged to produce a sentence whose meaning depended on a possessive apostrophe, came up with:
  • "Those things over there are my husbands."
(I'm married to those men over there.)
  • "Those things over there are my husband's."
(Those things over there belong to my husband.)

So I can assure you that I will still much it up sometimes. But at least now I have a way of working out what should be the correct use of the '

Right Paul - no testing on this one at home ok ;-)

Happy New Year

Well, it's Wednesday January 2nd 2008 and I, Angela, am back at work already *sigh*. I miss Jan 2nd being "the day after new years day" public holiday. However we do have Australia day in a few weeks which is a long weekend, so I shouldn't complain too much aye ;-) So 3 full weeks of work, then a long weekend , another full week of work and then Paul and I are off to NZ for 10 days. YAY!!! So exciting!

Anyway, so what did we get up to at new years! Well since the weather was pretty awful - blowing a gale and constant showers, we were pretty limited in what we could do. However Paul's mate Gav txt on Sunday evening and asked what we were doing. So it was decided that we'd watch the fireworks at South Bank. Initially we were going to watch Oceans 13 on the big outdoor movie screen in South Bank as well - however the wind, rain and wet grass kinda put us off that idea. So instead at 9pm, after having an extended coffee at Coffee Club in the square, we headed down to West End and had a nice Indian curry for dinner at Sitah (we had booked in fortunately as they were pretty busy when we arrived). I was even brave enough to try a medium curry for the first time in years. It's amazing that when you stop eating so many curries how your tolerance drops pretty quickly.

Fortunately the wind died down enough that the fireworks could still go ahead, so not long after 11 we headed back towards south bank and took up a prime spot on Victoria Bridge. Unfortunately we had 45 mins to wait and that was plenty of time for 2 rain showers to come through. And since the weather resembled "windy wellington" instead of "sunny Brisbane" we had to harden up and stick out the rain since we had left our umbrellas at home :-( All up we got caught in 4 showers over the night - 1 on the way to dinner, 2 while waiting for the fireworks and the the last one on the way back to Roma St train station to go home! It's a good thing I didn't care what my hair looked like aye ;-) Maybe thats why I have no photos of me form new years :-) I have a few pics of the fireworks but once again don't have my camera cable at work so will try and add them when I get home (good luck ;-) )

Anyway so all up it was a pretty relaxing Christmas holiday break. We spent way too much money (whoops) didn't get nearly enough accomplished around the house (whoops) but I got lots of reading done and movies watched (yay)! Currently I'm reading "Everyone Worth Knowing" by Laura Weisberger, the chick who wrote The Devil Wears Prada. I'm 1/3 of the way through and it seems to be pretty good so far - so at this point I recommend it!

Well I don't really believe in new years resolutions as I think if you want to change something then just do it - don't wait for a random day as an excuse for procrastinating. But just to get in the spirit I thought I would have a couple.
  1. No more buying my morning coffee at French Twist. If the staff know not only your order but also your name then you know you go there too often. Even if if is only $3.70 for a large latte.
  2. Get wedding planning! No more procrastinating that the wedding is ages away! It is now 2008 and the wedding is this year!
Well that's it. Better go and actually do some work. Enjoy your public holiday NZ!!!

Happy New Year!!

Ange
